Why do people leave their computers on all day?

I have noticed that many people leave their computers on all day for some reason. I would like to know why and if its better or worse for the computer than to just turn it off. Also, is it more efficient to leave it on?

Anyway, the only thing I would like to know is why do many people leave their computers on all day and if you are one of them, why?

Computers & the Wii?

We are pulling our hair out trying to connect my grandsons Wii to the internet. The router we are using is a Livebox by Orange-Wannadoo..We have a laptop connecting a O.K, But the Wii will not connect.Have done all the right things, wep nu to allow access, but everytime the message comes back that its locked.Speaking to Wannadoo about this was a waste of space, i don't think they understands there own product, In bearly understandable English he came up with the old Acorn that the computers were down, whats that got to do with some advice i don't know..Anybody out there with the intelligence to sort this problem out...We did turn off the firewire whilst trying to connect, any suggestions would be appreciated. Hi, good answer from the guy abve, he's the only one who really knows what he's talking about apart from me of course and what is the first guy on about with $200 for a wireless bridge. I got mine for 拢25.

I haven't got a Wii but I have got a 360 which connects wirelessly. Wii comes with wireless as standard I believe.

First thing is make sure that your router is set up as a dchp server although if you are clever you can work round this. DCHP is easiest as it alocates an IP address automatically when you try to connect.

On your Wii also ensure that in network setting (If it's like my xbox) that it is aslo set up to obtain IP and DNS address automatically.

Computers when we reach the singularity?

If and when, although I'm defiantly leaning towards when, computers reach super intelligence and are able to refine their own code, will they become smart enough to solve any question given to them, from solving faster than light speed travel to human immortality. I read that this will happen around 2020. does anyone know anything in depth about this or agree that they will be able to solve anything. I am kinda wanting the living for a very long time one, maybe a few thousand years, more if possible. But this is not unreasonable from a super intelligence above our own is it?

Computers when we reach the singularity?firewall

A computer will never understand who you are.

But you can!

Computers when we reach the singularity?husqvarna

Do not believe the marketing hype.

Cpmputers are not going to reach some sort of discontinuity in development - its impossible. Some marketing geek obviously heard of singularities and spouted off without actually understanding a word he was talking about.

And we will never travel faster than light - it is a fundamental law of the universe. No amount of cleverness will overcome it.

DVD formats for computers?

I'm aware of PAL, SECAM and NTSC formats for DVD players. But do such formats exist for computers?

For instance, if I burn a NTSC formatted DVD onto a blank dvd disc, am I capable of playing it on a computer or DVD player in Europe which plays PAL or SECAM? If not, how can I resolve this?

Thanks

You just need playing software that does it. Try PowerDVD.

I would like to connect my kids computers to my main computer so they can access the broad band?free antivirus download

First of all you should connect each computer to the router not to one another. If you do this broadband should be available on each computer without any configuration. As far as sharing your printer - make sure all computers have the same workgroup name. On each computer right click on My Computer %26gt; Properties %26gt; Open the Computer Name tab - click on Change and set all the Workgroup names to be the same. Now on the computer that has the printer attached goto Control Panel %26gt; Printers %26 Faxes %26gt; Select the printer - Right click and select the sharing options. Good luck.

Who dares wins.

OK it sounds like you are almost there. First make sure that all of the computers (2-XP and 1-ME computer) are attached to the router only and not to each other with the CAT5 cables.

  • Why does it seem that Christians think computers are bad?

I'm not saying all christians are against computers, but I was reading this cartoon by Chick Publications called ''The Beast'' and it said that computers and the internet will aid ''The Beast'' in conquering the world. And today, I was listening to a christian TV show that said that this guy had a huge computer in his house, and the christian neighbor asked ''What can you do with it?'' or ''What is it worth''?....

Do they think computers are going to aid the Beast or are they evil?

Ah Chick. ROFL!!!! He's the one that put out a pamphlet that claimed witches really do fly on brooms. At one time, some Christians were putting out that the WWW for world wide web, was actually 666 in disguise. These are the people who have a lot of time on their hands and over-active imaginations.

I consider myself a christian, and i love my computer. Does that make me bad, or am i not a true christian? I think that cartoon's author is wrong, don't read it anymore. If the cartoon is sending out messages that are bias to the authors own opinions, it is not worth reading. Honestly I am not sure about what the 'rules' are to be a christian. But I am sure that it doesn't mean you have to hate computers! My Lutheran church uses computers daily, they even has their own website: http://www.superiorwi.com/oursaviors/ind...

Doc's showing up differently on different computers?

Say you have a word doc you are working on, with a lot of different fonts and such. Then you email that doc to yourself so you can go to another computer, open it, and work on it. When you open it on the 2nd computer, some of the fonts look different, and some of the formatting is minorly changed. So you adjust fire, fix the formatting, etc., email it back to yourself, open it back up on the 1st compter and there are minor adjustments that need to be made AGAIN. Is this all caused because the same fonts are not installed on both computers? And if so, is there any way I can get the fonts I want to use to show up on the computer that does not have these same fonts installed....withought having to keep changing things? Hope this makes sense!! :)

Doc's showing up differently on different computers?free spyware

Stick to the most common fonts: such as Times New Roman and Courier New.

Also, make sure you are using the same version of Word. If you are moving a modern Word document to a computer with an older version of Word (or vice versa) it will look different.

Doc's showing up differently on different computers?live update

well lady the only way to fix taht is to install the fonts or make use of fonts that are commonly available!
that's happening because the other PC has different software than the ones you have in your own PC. Obviously the fonts you have are not installed in the second PC...
Yes, it is probably due to the fact that you have different fonts on the two computers. You can copy fonts from one computer to another by looking in your C:\Windows\Fonts folder.

Is it that difficult for computer and Internet companies to locate stolen computers and notify the p

Since computers are identified by the local connection network in order to access the Internet, can they also be located ? If so, the local police working together with the local Internet connection network - could recover the vast majority of stolen computers and return them to their rightful owners.

Is it that difficult for computer and Internet companies to locate stolen computers and notify the police ?hijack this

It can be difficult depending on the computer and its associated software/hardware config. Most computers that I protect in the commercial field and some residential customers use a software based application that ''calls home to momma'' once its connected to the internet.

The reason for this is because its a lot easier for the local law enforcement and the victim of the missing laptop to locate the laptop.

Doing a blind search for hardware such as a mac address ( I think this is the Local area connection you are referring to) on the entire internet would take years and so many resources both on hardware and personell.

Unless its a matter of national security, I doubt without specific software as I first mentioned, it's rare that stolen laptops recovered get back to their rightful owners.

I hope this answers or gives you a little more insight as to why or why not stolen laptops are not recovered as much as they should be.

i don't think it would be that difficult if u knew ur ip address

depends what version you have, legally you only allow to install one copy of office on one computer. There are sites that claim if you have the student/teacher edition you can install it on 3 different computers. However, it would seem that you can install office on 1 desktop and 1 laptop and it would seem as that as far as you can go with office.

User Accounts NOT set up on Domain Computers?? - Offsite use the same?

Our company has moved ten employees and their computers to an off-site location. They are connecting to the server via a VPN.

All has been working fine until a few problems (one employee's password changed, disabling a connection) (another lost access to the indv files, can see the folders but not the files).

I just discovered these computers are not set up with the employee as an account user. This seems to be causing the problem, but I cannot be sure. I have set them up as an account user on their respective computer, and they are good to go again.

My question is this --- Is there a reason that employees are not set up as Account Users on their office computers? Am I making a mistakes by doing this?

I am the new IT person, but only by default! lol

Please advise if I am making a big mistake. I do not know about the cache thing either! HELP! Please add details!

User Accounts NOT set up on Domain Computers?? - Offsite use the same?husqvarna

By default, the ''Domain Users'' Active Directory group should be a member of the ''Users'' group on the local machine. Generally-speaking, the users do not have their individual accounts configured as users on the local machine, since they get those permissions by virtue of being a member of Domain Users.

    So, my questions would be:

    1. At initial logon, are the users able to authenticate to the domain (where the domain name shows in the ''Logon to'' dropdown)?

    2. Is the VPN done using a piece of hardware that establishes a VPN tunnel for the entire office, or is each workstation establishing an individual VPN connection?

    3. Are the users able to access any domain resources like network file shares at the main office?

Computers evolved. First there were manual typewriters, then there were electric typewriters then there were electronic typewriters, then dedicated wordprocessors but also along the line on a different path computers were being designed, rather like humans and apes, then computers become popular in the mid 70's to 80's and now computers are in every walk of life, your phone is a computer, your calculator is a computer, you get your money out of a hole in the wall - an ATM, a computer, your money goes into a till in the supermarket and you get a receipt out of it - a computer. But the real beginning for the proper computer is down to Babbage.

Despite having a good knowledge of computers/technology I find myself completely ignorant in this one area, and so I'll ask.

I have a wireless adapter card in each of the two computers, is this all I need or do I need more?

And how do I go about networking them?

    Wirelessly coonecting two computers?internet

well you can do what they said and purchase a wireless switch or you can buy two wireless dongles (blue tooth) which all you initially have to do is connect them (to the computer) and find them (on your computer).

    Wirelessly coonecting two computers?network

If you run Vista and have Wi-Fi, you can do the following:

    Click the Start orb

    Go to Connect to

Click Set up a new connection

Click Set up a wireless connection between two computers (have your Wi-Fi button switched on now)

    Follow instructions in the wizard.

If you have a router, click 'Set up a router or an access point' or 'Manually set up a wireless network' (recommended that you have a USB flash drive) instead of the two computers link.

If you use Win XP, do the following:

Click the start button and go to the Connect To (or similar) pop-up.

Go to wireless networks (or similar).

    Set Up a network.
you would need to purchase a wireless router. connect both of them to the router and youll be able to see them in your network.

Yes, you can create crosslink parallel (or serial) cables. Or you can use the infrared ports. Or you can use the USB ports...

To make cables yourself you need the pinout for the port you want to make cables for. You can find pinouts at http://www.technick.net/public/code/pino...
you can use a cross over cat5 cable or you can use a usb cable
yes its possible..u just need a cat5 cross cable crimped with proper codes %26 connect it to RJ 45 connector. Thats it. Now ur Lan card setting can help u to communicate within 02 different computers only.
Yeah you can by doing peer to peer connections. Just cable them together and you can select what you want to be shared by right clicking the folder and sharing it...in simple terms because im at work and cant explain fully
By connecting two computers with a cable and communicating between them, you are creating a network.

    So, no, but also yes.
If both machines have network connectors then you can join them with a crossover CAT5 cable, then run the network setup wizard on both machines and then you can access shared folders on either machine from either machine.
You can get an ethernet cable and set it up to share the connection. Then you can use windows XP or vista shared files to copy your files over.

Computers are damaging social skills - negative.?nortin

I think there are strong arguments for both sides.

Computers are damaging social skills in many ways.

    1. Decreased spelling ability for the average student, and over usage of acronyms (I'm at the crotchety old age of 24 and had all of this omfg, lmfao, ttyl B.S.)

    2. Less direct social interaction. This is much more legit than my complain in the first point. When people come together socially and interact, there are much more ideas being communicated than simply the words expressed. The body language, the eye contact, the subtle unconscious reactions (blushing, flinching). ALL of these lead to a more accurate conveyance of an idea or story. When only email/text/IM is being utilized, it's reducing the amount of information being transferred. It makes it less personal, less real.
