I have noticed that many people leave their computers on all day for some reason. I would like to know why and if its better or worse for the computer than to just turn it off. Also, is it more efficient to leave it on?

I haven't got a Wii but I have got a 360 which connects wirelessly. Wii comes with wireless as standard I believe.

First thing is make sure that your router is set up as a dchp server although if you are clever you can work round this. DCHP is easiest as it alocates an IP address automatically when you try to connect.

On your Wii also ensure that in network setting (If it's like my xbox) that it is aslo set up to obtain IP and DNS address automatically.

DVD formats for computers?

I'm aware of PAL, SECAM and NTSC formats for DVD players. But do such formats exist for computers?

For instance, if I burn a NTSC formatted DVD onto a blank dvd disc, am I capable of playing it on a computer or DVD player in Europe which plays PAL or SECAM? If not, how can I resolve this?

First of all you should connect each computer to the router not to one another. If you do this broadband should be available on each computer without any configuration. As far as sharing your printer - make sure all computers have the same workgroup name. On each computer right click on My Computer %26gt; Properties %26gt; Open the Computer Name tab - click on Change and set all the Workgroup names to be the same. Now on the computer that has the printer attached goto Control Panel %26gt; Printers %26 Faxes %26gt; Select the printer - Right click and select the sharing options. Good luck.

Say you have a word doc you are working on, with a lot of different fonts and such. Then you email that doc to yourself so you can go to another computer, open it, and work on it. When you open it on the 2nd computer, some of the fonts look different, and some of the formatting is minorly changed. So you adjust fire, fix the formatting, etc., email it back to yourself, open it back up on the 1st compter and there are minor adjustments that need to be made AGAIN. Is this all caused because the same fonts are not installed on both computers? And if so, is there any way I can get the fonts I want to use to show up on the computer that does not have these same fonts installed....withought having to keep changing things? Hope this makes sense!! :)

Doing a blind search for hardware such as a mac address ( I think this is the Local area connection you are referring to) on the entire internet would take years and so many resources both on hardware and personell.

Unless its a matter of national security, I doubt without specific software as I first mentioned, it's rare that stolen laptops recovered get back to their rightful owners.

I hope this answers or gives you a little more insight as to why or why not stolen laptops are not recovered as much as they should be.

You will need to run the network wizard on the two computers. The new router has probably assigned different IP numbers to the two computers that are not compatible with your old routers IP numbers.

I've recently deleted the Norton Anti-Virus program to install the Tren Micro virus program. While deleting the Norton Anti-Virus software, I might've (I'm uncertain if THIS is what triggered the problem) deleted SOME THING, some PROGRAM that now will not allow me to upload any cd's, including the Trend Micro Installation CD.

If it hasn't done this before then restart your pc and press F5 untill you see a menu, select safe mode, wait till windows loads, check to see if the cd rom works, if doesn't take off cd rom and restart it on safe mode again, insert cd rom again and see if it works.

Our company has moved ten employees and their computers to an off-site location. They are connecting to the server via a VPN.

All has been working fine until a few problems (one employee's password changed, disabling a connection) (another lost access to the indv files, can see the folders but not the files).

I just discovered these computers are not set up with the employee as an account user. This seems to be causing the problem, but I cannot be sure. I have set them up as an account user on their respective computer, and they are good to go again.

My question is this --- Is there a reason that employees are not set up as Account Users on their office computers? Am I making a mistakes by doing this?

I am the new IT person, but only by default! lol

I think there are strong arguments for both sides.

1. Decreased spelling ability for the average student, and over usage of acronyms (I'm at the crotchety old age of 24 and had all of this omfg, lmfao, ttyl B.S.)

2. Less direct social interaction. This is much more legit than my complain in the first point. When people come together socially and interact, there are much more ideas being communicated than simply the words expressed. The body language, the eye contact, the subtle unconscious reactions (blushing, flinching). ALL of these lead to a more accurate conveyance of an idea or story. When only email/text/IM is being utilized, it's reducing the amount of information being transferred. It makes it less personal, less real.

When loading up computer hit f8 (it might be f10) and it should let you chose '' safe mode '' open with this and choose '' administrator '' then go to user accounts and you can remove users and passwords. Then remove password and restart computer and hey presto your in. Hope this helps you out Mate.

you want the live cd , download and burn it to a disc (you know how to burn a disc image right?) then just put it into the locked comps drive and turn it on, it will start into the cd , tell it the password you want it to crack and it will get it for you.
is there more than one person that can log on?? if so log on under a different name and go into control panel and then go into user accounts from there should be options to change passwords (i have had to do it for my bro before- but you can only do this if there is more than 1 person that can log on and i also dont know what os you have (os - operating system)

More info would be very helpful. What OS? If Vista do not use Adaware (unless you want to give the Beta version a shot). Do you have a firewall? Do you have only one anti-virus program working? Did it get slower recently after a download? Did you switch to AVG 8.0 (much slower than 7.5)? Are you running Spybot (you should). Do you have sufficient hard drive space, sufficient ram, etc?
If the system is old contact somebody who knows about computers. Ask them for a 'back up and reinstalation of operating system.' this will remove all unwanted files, reset the Registry (this is what makes it slow.) and it should work like a new computer.

I am in the Graphic Design program. I work on projects dealing with ads and logo designs. I work with programs like - Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I just recently bought a computer laptop. I'm planning to install these same programs into my laptop. This will be good for working from off of my laptop at home then transfering my projects back onto the school's computers when I'm at school. If I have a different edition than my school has. For example - My laptop runs WindowsXP Professional. The school has windows XP Home Edition. Will this affect the compatibility of my laptop computer with my school's computers.

You shouldn't have a problem with those apps as far as XP Home/Pro. They should run fine on either. BUT, Photoshop %26 Illustrator are huge memory hogs. I hope your PC has 1 GB or better of RAM.

If we're talking about XP Home, then the options are limited. You would need to set a password which should be an option on the ''sharing'' tab under properties of the drive.

If all needing access have XP Pro, then you should first make sure ''Simple File Sharing'' is disabled. Then on your sharing tab you will see more options - definitely the password issue.

Dude, most NEW computers run AT LEAST $600. If it's a relatively old one (Pentium III, for instance) then $80 ain't a bad buy, but if it has something like a Pentium Celeron, then $80 is wayyyyyyyyy cheap. Slightly higher, if it's Celeron or newer, otherwise it's perfectly fine.

If you are just wanting to share files, on one computer, right-click the folder that the files are in and choose ''Sharing and Security''. On the page that comes up, choose the radio button next to ''Share this folder''. By default it will share it to anyone, which is not very secure, but works. You can adjust who can see it by using the permissions button. Once your done, click OK. On the other computer, you should now be able to see the first computers shared folder. You can browse to it several ways, I usually click ''Start'' then ''run'' then type in the name of the computer using this format: \\ComputerName then click OK, and it will show you all available shares on that machine.

If you're using Windows XP:

I'll assume you've connected both PC...

1. Set one of your computer (the one with modem) as a server by setting it's TCP/IP value to 192.168.0.1

2. set the other one to 192.168.0.2, then set the gateway 192.168.0.1

3. Go online and see that both computer can connect to internet

If you're using Windows98, the process is a bit trickier and the failure percentage is quite big

1. Set your server IP the same as above

2. Insert your win98 CD, install Internet Connection Sharing

3. On your second computer, set the Ip setting into ''Obtain address automatically''

You can't prevent it showing to the network. You can set up a user on the serving machine to match the user on the client you want to share it with. Same user name, same password. Then right click the drive, add this user and the local user to it's access list. Set full control to both users, then remove all other access to it. This way if anyone else tries to access it they get a user and password request, followed by a refusal.

Computers time changes by?

My computers time is changed by half an hour. When I correct the time and again start the machine next day the time has changed by half an hour. I usually do not allow to update time automatically.

What do you think as the reason for this kind of behaviour? Is it somekind of hardware problem (battery?)?

Internet for two computers?

I have a desktop with broadband connection w/ ethernet cord and I want to buy a laptop. I think I need a router for both computers to be on the internet at the same time or is there something I can buy built in to the laptop that takes the place of the router. Also I have comcast, does anyone know if I have to pay more money for more than one computer. It's bad enough I have to pay for internet and cable and it's the same wire. I am really confused on how this all works so any help would be great. thanks

Yea just buy a router if you plan on using ethernet cords. Connect your Cable or DSL modem to your 1st port of the router, and just plug in yourself in anyone of the other ports on your router except the uplink port. Same goes with your other computer, any port except the uplink one. For your other worries, nah they won't charge you for having multiple computers on your internet connection. For example if you wanted to have a PC party, You and 20 or more people can share your internet, provided you have enough ports for them, Oh and use hubs to link up to your router and branch it for multiple PCs. Example of that would be say both of your computers are hooked in to your router, you can hook in a hub to your uplink and have 4-5 more other people sharing that same line as you are. If you want more people, have another hub hookin the 1st hubs uplink, and your gold. Want even more people just repeat. Assuming everyones got the right protocols, but thats a whole new topic.

Hi, I have two computers running xp and have a linksys wireless g broadband router model wrt54g. My other computer has a wireless connector and both are online. Alright yo udo need to run The network Setup wizard on all of your Pc's that you want to connect to. The biggest key to getting it all to work is that you make sure the NAME you provide for the WORKGROUP is the same on all the PC's. Once you have finished the wizard you should be set. The firewall will not be an issue once you run the wizard unless you have one running on your Router.

If you do than you need to set your router to allow file %26 print sharing between the PCs. you wil be set then. Enjoy!!

Assuming that you have windows xp installed on both the computers. Try running the network setup wizard from the control panel on both the computers. Provide some more info and we would be able to help you much better.

I started wanting to make an RPG game with a free program called ALICE and I realized that ALICE was a bit to basic for an RPG game and programs like G-Max are WAY to expensive.

So I decided to just do and arcade type of game but I still can't use ALICE.

So I went to see about a Macromedia Flash Program and they're too expensive, so I found Laszlo...

Any help I can get is good!

make connection like:

modem-router-pc 1..pc2..

you have to make workgroup in both the pc(should be same).

go to control panel and run network setup wizard in both the pc's (one by one and you need to restart your machins).you should be able to see your machines ( network places) now go for sharing and permissions do as per your requirement.

If your other computer has a wireless adaptor in it just look for available networks in the area and find yours. You will then double click on it and it should ask you for the password. It is located on the side of the modem/router from Verizon. After doing this it should be able to go on-line.

It's extremely unlikely. I assume you are talking about dialing from one computer using a modem to another. This is reasonably safe, and is a time tested communication technology. I used a computer with a modem for over ten years with no noticeable ill effect on the computer - heck, most of the world did, before broadband connections became more common.

It could be coincidence, but if this has happened too often I'd check your power. Is it getting spikes from an air conditioner that has a bad cap, or is there something coming down the line that is causing power fluctuations that are taking them out? Do you have something as simple as a bad ground? No ground can cause havoc because the built in electronics that handle over voltage, static and other issues do not have a place to bleed off excess electricity. Do you get a lot of static electricity? My computers usually last for years and I have to upgrade tham to newer tech before they die. You might want to get a power line conditioner for your computer system and see if that makes them last longer...

You can not use a domain name unless you have a domain controller server on the network. They need to be in the same workgroup. You need to set the exception for file and printer sharing in both firewalls and both machines need at least one resource (printer or folder) set shared. You do not say if they can connect to the internet, if so they should at least reply to a ping but you will need to try pinging by IP address, both of which should be set to automatic. If this works, the problem is simply browsing. Go to the tcp/ip properties of each machine click advanced and in the wins tab set always use netbios over tcp/ip. This may raise a warning about a missing wins address, cancel the message.

A laptop would come with the things you ''need''. But you might have to research on the CPU speed, how much RAM (memory) it has, how big the Hard Drive is, etc. etc. Which can be a pain when you first start out. So I strongly suggest you take a look at the Mac Book. It includes all the necessary basics with a good price tag and it's very stable. Just go for the basic model and you can forget about researching all these other PC brands.

For wireless, you want a laptop which has a built-in wireless. For example, the Mac Book. And when you go to a public library or school, your laptop will automatically searches the network for you. It's very easy. If you don't have one at home now, don't worry much about it.

I bought a new router and tried to setup a LAN. All the lights on the router are up and I can access the shared files and folders using any computer in the network. However, I can access the internet using only one computer. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cables, changed cables and restarted all the computers and router. Could it be that the router is the problem? I'm using an Encore 5-port 10/100Mbps NWay Switch. I would really appreciate any inputs. Thanks!

a switch is a layer 2 device (for the most part) and does not have features like PAT to allow the single ip address you have to be shared among more than one computer.

Actually, the switch would work...if the server on the other side is handing out numbers by DHCP. If you are connecting your switch to DSL, then you need to check with your provider to see if they are running DHCP and, if so, how many connections you can have. If not, then you are probably running with a fixed IP or are only allowed one connection. In that case, those that are saying a router/NAT or a dual-NIC computer acting as a DHCP server is easiest solution.

The way I've done it is, i've connected both PCs to a ADSL router modem. That router modem is connected to the internet. Now none of the PCs are sharng files or programs. I think you have to set up some network settings for that sharing option. So as long as you don't do that... yur PCs won't be sharing anything.

The office that I work at has three computers. One of which I had encountered a spyware/adware infection last night. So far, on every computer, I having problems loading pages. 1. If you're using Windows, you can check if the LAN is active by looking at the lower part of the screen and seeing if the icon with two computers are active, meaning, they blink from time to time. Double-clicking this icon shows whether the connection is Connected or Disconnected.

2. You can also check the rear part of the computer where your LAN cable is connected. You should see a blinking light very near the port where the LAN cable is connected. If this light is not blinking, then there's a problem with your network.

3. If one computer is attacked by a spyware/adware, the other two computers shouldn't have any problems. You can also try accessing the other two computers to check if your LAN card is working.

Older computer will have pci slots (unless your referring to an ethernet adapter). In which case you can get two cheap ones for almost nothing.

Ok, simplest way to do this:

run a usb cable to one computer from the modem (if you have USB)

run a cross-over cat-5 cable to the second computer from the first.

enable ''internet connection sharing'' on the first.

Honestly, for $49 you can get a linksys wrt45g? I think that is the model, your basic blue dual-antenna wireless router. Don't have to go wireless, but non wireless routers are more expensive. Really, it will save your sanity. Otherwise, your creating what is considered a proxy server.

Also agree with Acadia, NAT is huge plus, it prevents your computers from being hit from the outside, the router is the only target unless you have a virus or trojan.
