More info would be very helpful. What OS? If Vista do not use Adaware (unless you want to give the Beta version a shot). Do you have a firewall? Do you have only one anti-virus program working? Did it get slower recently after a download? Did you switch to AVG 8.0 (much slower than 7.5)? Are you running Spybot (you should). Do you have sufficient hard drive space, sufficient ram, etc?
If the system is old contact somebody who knows about computers. Ask them for a 'back up and reinstalation of operating system.' this will remove all unwanted files, reset the Registry (this is what makes it slow.) and it should work like a new computer.

First of all, when your computer comes from the factory with it's default settings, it has been optimized to run properly. Over the time, as you add files and software - and just as importantly, remove files and software - your computer gets farther and farther away from it's optimal settings. To put this in perspective, it would be like adding parts to your car, and then removing some other parts and then adding more parts after that. Finally, your car doesn't run very well anymore.
